The best way to see Iceland is by plane. Actually, it's the only way to see much of the highlands — only a couple gravel roads cross through the country's vast, ungovernable interior. From the air, you get an incredible sense of Iceland's incredible geological diversity, as massive glaciers and still-smoking volcanoes give way to verdant valleys, fields of lava and amazing waterfalls. A constantly changing landscape, packed with scenes of extraordinary color ... Iceland might be cold and remote, but it's certainly not lacking for natural beauty.
